How to Clean and Maintain Your Sedge or Seagrass Rug – A Guide from Tonkin Handicraft

Handwoven sedge and seagrass rugs are beautiful, natural, and incredibly durable when properly cared for. At Tonkin Handicraft, we want your rug to remain as vibrant and fresh as the day you received it. Here’s our quick and effective guide to keeping your rug clean, mold-free, and long-lasting, without compromising its delicate weave.

☀️ 1. The Best Method: Sunlight Drying

The simplest and safest way to clean your sedge or seagrass rug is to air it out under direct sunlight.

  • Why? Washing these rugs with water can easily damage the handwoven fibers, leading to fraying and shortened lifespan.

  • How? Place the rug under strong sunlight for 2–3 hours on each side. The heat will kill bacteria, mold spores, and eliminate odors naturally.

  • Bonus: Sun-drying also restores the fresh, earthy scent of the grass.

🧼 2. In Case You Must Wash It

If the rug becomes heavily soiled and must be washed:

  • Rinse quickly with clean water — avoid prolonged soaking.

  • Do not twist or scrub; instead, let the water run through the rug.

  • Hang the rug vertically on a wall or fence to let excess water drain.

  • Once mostly dry, lay it flat under the sun to finish drying.

Important: Fast drainage and drying are key. Prolonged dampness can lead to mold and discoloration.

🌫️ 3. Humid Season Tips

During periods of high humidity:

  • Store it in a dry, ventilated area when not in use.
  • Avoid placing directly on damp floors or near wet areas (e.g., bathrooms).

Best Practice: Combine Both Methods

For optimal freshness and durability, we recommend combining both sun-drying and water cleaning. This dual method ensures your rug is disinfected, dried, and preserved beautifully.
